Executive Summary: There are a number of things going on in Anchorage that require our attention. Be prepared to participate, or watch On_Site go down before it gets started. Paper Matches. That was not a mistake. Paper Matches. Read on.
There are a number of meeting that are going to need to have our presence THIS week. I keep mentioning this because they are the precursor to the presentation of the On-Site proposal that is being developed for vote at the Assembly Meeting of the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) on Tuesday May 21st, 2019. Remember that the MOA holds the issues pertaining to the Marijuana Industry for the end of the agenda so they can dismiss the student representative. So it is generally a late night.
BEFORE any of that happens :
There is a Federation of Community Councils meeting happening Wednesday the 15th in Anchorage. See the post from yesterday for the details.
Then a Friday work session for the MOA. This is the second work session and there weren't enough people at the first one last Friday. We need participation in this if you have time, or if this issue matters, then spare some time.
2nd Work session for On Site Ordinances is
- Friday, May 17, 2 pm to 3 pm, City Hall, 632 W 6th Ave, 1st Floor Conference Room
Finally will be the coming Assembly introduction and vote. That will be happening this coming Tuesday evening during the regular Assembly meeting. We need to be there too.
Tuesday May 21st, 2019 at the Loussac Library Assembly Chambers.
I am speaking to Anchorage directly. We have a chance to get this in place. This is really bigger than just a city issue for our industry nationally. We need to put our efforts into making this happen. Everyone involved in the Cannabis industry from here to Florida knows how we who are involved are viewed as pariahs. People look at us and still have no appreciation for the fact that the crime rates haven't jumped. How we haven't seen a huge jump our detractors had predicted in teen cannabis use, when part of the purpose to legalize was to get marijuana out of the hands of teens. And there is a lot more that we are doing that is beneficial for the community at large, but we are going to have to prove ourselves repeatedly in this process. Remember that we are trying to replace 90 years of propaganda with information and education. That means we are going to have to work. This is one of those times. I know Nick asked me to make sure that everybody in the ACBA got this information about meetings, we need to ramp this up. Fast.
Don't forget the Statewide Call-in, info on the website.
Last thing today is Paper Matches. Didn't think I was going to get there did you? We need to start working toward helping with the Global Climate issue and I know about the fact that if we just started planting hemp, and working with that to replace artificial fiber we could move this issue forward fast. Nothing like a plant to capture carbon and give off oxygen, eh? But we need to do more, and what I am going to throw out there is just one step in the right direction. I am just putting these ideas out there to help members who have the desire become more responsible earthlings. You don't have to stop selling lighters , but think about this. Every year about one Billion lighters get thrown away, most end up taking up space in land fills (big waste issue) but a huge number become litter and a lot of those end up in our storm drains / ditches and guess what, animals eat them too. One billion lighters are sold per year in the U.S. Americans throw away 350 million disposable lighters. There were even 14 confirmed deaths from malfunctioning lighters during the period 1994 to 2002. You might save a life.
My point? How about we as an industry start working to make moves that are working FOR the planet? Set the example for others to follow. Paper Matches. I've see a lot stores with them on the counter. But how about you include them with every purchase and to remind people to get in the habit of using them, and make sure they have your logo. Just because we're helping the planet doesn't mean we have to pass up an advertising opportunity!
